Tenth Street Walking and Bicycling

For a fun weekend walk or bicycle adventure you should try walking or bicycling from Omaha’s Old Market to the Henry Doorly Zoo on South 10th Street.  The round trip is 4 1/2 miles, so you will meet your 10,000 steps a day goal.  There are sidewalks for the entire route.

The zoo is closed during the corona virus pandemic, but while outside the zoo, you can hear the bird calls and other animals.  The zoo parking area has wonderful landscaping.

Near the Old Market you will see the Durham Museum , which was Union Station.  You will also see headquarters of KETV, which was Burlington Station.  Further South, the route is lined with duplexes, small apartment buildings and frame houses, some of which date to the 1890’s.

If you do not like walking or biking up the hill, you can rent an e-bike at Heartland B-Cycle.

The importance of walking will be discusses in a book to be published on May 12, 2020 by W.W. Norton by Dr. Shane O’Mara titled  “In Praise of Walking: A New Scientific Exploration,”
